More Than Broccoli is a website that showcase how easy and delicious plant-based meals are.
Why? Because changing the way we eat is the one action that everyone can take to tackle climate change. It is also the action that we have most control over.
The things we need to do as a society to tackle climate change are well-known. It includes traveling more sustainably, improving the efficiency of our homes, changing how we heat and cool our homes and workspaces, wasting less and using products for longer, and changing our diet. We may not have control over all of these, for example when we live in a rented home or live in a town that does not have good public transport connections.
However, we can choose what we eat. And this has a great impact.
On a global level, a quarter of all greenhouse gas emissions are linked to the food system. This is mostly about what we eat, not where it comes from.
Eating more plant-based is better for your health too, and can save you money.
But change is hard. Especially when it comes to something so deeply rooted in traditions and habits as the things we eat. Food is not just there to nourish and fuel us, it’s a social activity too. Sharing a meal is a cherished practice across nations and cultures.
More Than Brocoli has shown that we can change the norm while still enjoying the deeply social ties with food.
So, Jenn, the founder of this website, decided to share recipes that are familiar to Western European cultures — particularly Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom — but are completely plant-based.
In 2022, More Than Broccoli posted weekly recipes and invited people to consciously change the way they eat once a week, for a year. The project showed that you don’t need to give up on your favourite meals and comfort food when eating plant-based. With 50 regular participants, we saved 30.2 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions in a single year. And that’s from just swapping one meal a week!
More Than Broccoli now features recipes, thoughts, reflections, tips and tricks relating to eating plant-based. These are updated on a regular basis and are a reflection of Jenn’s continued learning.
